What are the kids listening to these days?

Alright! This post is happening.

Another aspect of coming to South Korea that Sam and I were excited about was the endless stream of Korean pop music, or Kpop--and we have not been disappointed! Sure, we are not exactly in Seoul where all of the action is, but there is plenty of Kpop around us. From coffee shops and restaurants playing the latest hits, to Kpop groups being featured on products like pencil cases and slippers.

We were interested to know about what music our students listen to. While Kpop comes up and is popular with both our students and some of the Korean teachers we work with, American pop is also popular. I have heard students talk about Ed Sheeran, Adelle, and Rhianna. Plus our school plays the American pop in the lobby. Last night I heard Taylor Swift's "Look what you made me do" play at least twice.

According to our students, their current favorite Kpop groups are:
  • BTS
  • Wanna One
  • Red Velvet
  • Twice
  • Gfriend (students call them Girlfriend)
If you're interested, I will link the Kpop Wiki page here and you can read more about the rise and current status of Kpop. I won't go into too much ranting detail here, but I will talk about some basics if you're unfamiliar with the genre.

The basics:
  • Kpop is a combination of music, dance, and visual appeal through fashion and makeup.
  • Groups are primarily formed through companies.
  • Most trainees practice for many years with a company before debuting in a group, if they debut at all (competition is fierce and training is intense)
  • There are solo artists, though many solo artists also are/were part of a group.
I wanted to share some of the most popular groups/songs that are currently out, and hopefully you can get a taste of some of the fashion and interests of Koreans through their most popular music. It's not for everyone, but hopefully you can appreciate the hard work that is put into this type of music ☺

For full effect, watch in full screen mode. Enjoy!

1. BTS - DNA
Why you should listen: This seven piece male group, BTS is probably the #1 group in Korea right now, and they have been breaking into US Top lists as well. This song is from their new album, Love Yourself, released Sept 18.
Why I like them: Choreography is top notch

2. Red Velvet - Red Flavor
Why you should listen: SM entertainment is known for high quality groups and videos. This is one of the latest hits from this 5 member girl group.
Why I like them: Red Velvet always has catchy songs and my campers in SF liked listening to them too.

3. Seventeen - BoomBoom
Why you should listen: This 14-member male group (called Seventeen as in 17-carat diamond) has been nicknamed "self-producing" group because they do all of their own choreography and compositions. Seventeen was also the only Kpop group on Billboard's "21 Under 21 2015: Music's Hottest Young Stars" list
Why I like them: I love choreography, and the bigger the group, the more in-sync the members have to be in order for the effect to be successful. These guys pull it off every time ☺ This is one of my favorite songs from Seventeen.

4. KARD - Hola Hola
Why you should listen: This is the only co-ed group that I know of and they have a unique sound. Their first album came out a few months ago , this music video was filmed in LA and Las Vegas.
Why I like them: The four members have such distinctive voices, their songs are fun to listen to.

Hope you enjoyed! Let me know what you think of it.
I can make some more Kpop posts in the future ☺
