Trip to Daecheon Beach, Boryeong-si

Our first trip since arriving in Korea! Daecheon Beach, located about an hour from Sejong on the west coast in Boryeong-si, is a beautiful beach on the Yellow Sea. We were very fortunate to be invited on this trip by a few of our Korean co-workers.

The water was really warm too ☺

Sam took a great panorama picture

Fun fact: the seas that border South Korea are
West - Yellow Sea
East - Sea of Japan
South - East China Sea

Not a cloud in the sky!

View of the boardwalk

The boardwalk along the beach was full of open-air restaurants and sea food vendors. There were also signs about Boryeong Mud Fest, which our Korean co-workers told us was mostly a touristy/foreigner-event.

Boardwalk with restaurants

We also got to visit an outdoor fish market in town, which was SO cool. There were giant tanks everywhere, full of king crab, shrimp, octopus, flatfish, snapper, eels, and a Korean favorite called Meonggae (sea pineapple). Our co-workers purchased some shrimp, meonggae, and snapper for sashimi with dinner.

Tanks went on and on

Meonggae can be seen here (tank with red bins, on right)
It is bright red/orange and kind of looks like a plant.
It is technically a sea squirt and tastes like pure salt water ☺

Semi-indoor portion

A nice lady working here showed us this odd creature, gaebul or Urechis unicinctus, which though technically not a fish, our Korean co-workers told us was called the "penis fish"

So much king crab ♥♥♥

We stayed in a rented, countryside home in Boryeong. The view from the home was beautiful. And it had several large Argiope and Araneus orb weaver spiders hanging around it. The Araneus spider was much larger than any I had ever seen before, and she was maybe Araneus ventricosus, but I am not fully certain. Her web spanned eight feet from anchor point near the ground to anchor on the house, and the framework threads had a diameter around two feet. As the sun was setting she came out and began making repairs to her web, which was so much fun to watch. My companions were horrified, and this is all probably too much information for most of you, but I had a great spider weekend ☺

Thanks for reading! ☺

Coming soon: Our trip to the Alive Museum, Gongju, and our first time in a Korean Costco, plus exploring more of Sejong!

    1. Haha! I did try to take pictures of them but they were too high and the pictures did not do them justice. Sorry!! I will try to find better spider models ☺
