How does school work?
It has been a week now but we are starting to get a feel for how the school works. There are 7 periods throughout the afternoon and evening. The age of the children get older later into the evening. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we have middle school students in the evening.
The class content is pretty straight forward. Every class is assigned a textbook depending on what level of english they are at. There is a lesson schedule for what the teacher has to cover each day. As time goes on we should eventually finish the textbook. The textbooks for the beginner level students are very simple and have very basic lessons that help the students learn common phrases, simple vocabulary, and phonics. The beginner books also come with CDs that have special recordings and help the students with their listening and speaking skills. For the older, more advanced students the textbooks get into more specific content and help students write and speak in full sentences.
The students have been great so far. The little ones are pretty cute and fun. The older students, however, are very shy and try not to speak. I have to bait them into saying anything sometimes. The other teachers say that this is pretty normal and that you just have to be patient with them.
I think overall Zoë and I have been enjoying our teaching time even if it is stressful at times. We will keep you updated if anything changes.

Photo that Zoë took of our desks in the back. We get the "couple seats" since the room is angled and we are back-to-back. My chair is also missing an arm rest so I can use Zoë's. It works out.
