3 Week Update!

Image
Hi everyone! We thought it would be a good time to give everyone a basic update of how we are doing, what we are learning about Korea, and how things with the school are going ☺ How is life here? The location. For a city under constant construction, all of the buildings close to us are fully completed and so it is nice and quiet. We are near bus stops, plenty of food places, coffee shops, and trails along the rivers. The only downside to our location is its proximity to the major department stores (~20 minute walk to e-mart and ~50 minute walk to homeplus). To put it into perspective a little more, for those of you who are still unclear where Sejong is: Here is a screenshot from my phone using the Naver navigation app The red dot is showing my location (near the apartment) A little more zoom now Our apartment is very close to the Geum River The school is close to where the half-circle street is (just north of us) The apartment. Getting Around Sejong

Image
Now that we have been here for a couple weeks I thought it would be nice to talk about how we get around here. We do not have a car so we have to either walk or use public transportation. On the weekends we usually walk to go shopping and during the week we take the bus to go to work. We have taken a taxi once as well. We are still looking forward to taking a train and we will let you know when we do. Walking This was on our first walk to HomePlus. We are on one of the pathways by the river, which you can't see Walking around Sejong has been very enjoyable and easy to do. There are sidewalks everywhere. There are rivers that flow through the city so there are also many trails that go along the rivers. These trails are very nice and also make good shortcuts. Along the sidewalks and trails, there are many parks scattered throughout the city.  This makes for very pleasant walks because we can find nice places to sit and rest. Here is an entrance to a park we found

Trees and Shrubs

I am so excited to make this post! One of the things I was most looking forward to in coming to Korea was seeing all of the different plants, trees, insects, and birds that you wouldn't normally see in America. So yesterday Sam and I arrived to work a little early and we decided to visit this really pretty park that is directly across the street from the building we work in. That's the great thing about Sejong--because it was a planned city, there are so many parks and dedicated green spaces everywhere. It makes the city feel very open and honestly, I feel like it's a beautiful city. It is still growing, even the trees are all propped up to grow straight. And so it can be quiet in some places (due to lack of people), and very noisy in other places (because of construction noises), but I think one day this will be a destination for people to visit when they come to Korea. Panorama of the Park area. We are on a bit of a hill, so behind Sam there is actually a trail goi

Korean Snacks Review II

Image
Korean Snacks Review II: the sequel! Black Sesame Snack  ★ ★ ★ ☆ These have a great, brown rice crunch to them. They are a little grainy in texture but very crunchy and light. They have a sweet coating and are sort of covered by black sesame seeds (there aren't a lot of seeds though). I picked this snack because I saw a guy leaving with two bags and thought to just go for it. Overall I liked them, but I prefer saltier snacks. Final thoughts : I loved the texture and crunch, plus the flavor of the rice puff itself, but I'm not a huge fan of how sweet these are. Sweet Potato Snack  ★ ★ ☆ ☆ Sam picked these ones out for us. These snacks are puffs shaped like diamonds and have a small, waffle-weave texture. And they are coated with a sweet powder that very much tastes like sweet potatoes. Sam's thoughts: They were good, but I probably wouldn't get these again. My thoughts: This was too sweet. Would not buy again. Sour Cream Flavor Potato Cris

Trip to HomePlus

Image
This is sped-up footage (there was originally 17 minutes of footage) from our trip to HomePlus in Sejong City.  Sorry if the fast parts are hard to watch.  We are still getting used to our GoPro and we promise we will work on our camera skills. Just know that HomePlus is a huge store that has everything in it.  We didn't even film the grocery store part.  Hope you enjoy. PS The song is Ko Ko Bop by EXO

Craft beer in Sejong!

Image
When the previous teachers told us about a craft brew place that just opened near the apartment, I knew we had made the right choice in picking Sejong ☺ It is called Craft Bros and it is about a 10-15 minute walk from our apartment. There is another location in Seoul. Craft Bros just opened last month and it takes up the entire 10th floor of the building. It is beautiful inside, with lots of lights and different kinds of seating and space. When you first exit the elevator you are greeted by this cool sign Sam and I were greeted by a guy with an earpiece who spoke English well. He showed us around a little and asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside. Yeah, this was a rooftop tap house. We opted for outside because it was a great temp. He asked us if we wanted a blanket for if it got cold. What place ever offers you blankets?? One of the inside portions of the tap house The outside portion had grass and stepping stones and some trees as well. Behind my right sho

Rose Garden

Image
This past weekend, Sam and I attempted to walk to a closer supermarket/target-like store called Emart, however... we figured out that it is closed on every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. So bad luck there, but we stumbled upon a really cool park on the way. I wanted to share some pictures from the walk: Rose garden with really cool benches Map of the gardens The benches lean back a bit and are really comfy. We think that eventually the plants will grow up into the trellises ♥♥♥ And in the background, a really cool bridge spanning the Geum River, the third longest river in South Korea. There are actually many similar bridges that cross it in Sejong, all with their own cool architectural features.  Thanks for reading! More pictures to come soon ☺ We are also still working on editing the long video we took at Homeplus market the weekend before last. Thanks for being patient with us as we figure out editing.
